Pressure Washing: DIY vs. Hiring a Professional
Here at CL Parker, we've been serving central Ohio for 25 years, not just with painting expertise, but also with a keen eye for keeping your entire outdoor space looking its best. And that includes your beautiful patio pavers!
Pressure washing can be a lifesaver for reviving dirty patios, but it's important to do it the right way to avoid damaging the pavers or the sand between them. Here's what we, the cleaning and painting professionals at CL Parker, recommend:
Know your Pavers: Different materials require different cleaning approaches. For example, concrete pavers can handle a higher pressure setting than clay pavers. If you're unsure about your paver material, a quick web search or call to the manufacturer can help.
Start Soft: Always begin with a lower pressure setting and gradually increase it as needed. A good rule of thumb is to hold the spray nozzle at least a foot away from the surface.
Target Cleaning: Focus the spray on the dirty areas first, working in a sweeping motion. Avoid staying in one spot for too long, as this can erode the paver surface.
The Magic of Attachments: Consider using a fan nozzle for broader cleaning and a spot nozzle for tougher stains. A surface cleaner attachment can also be a lifesaver, allowing for efficient cleaning without damaging the sand between the pavers.
Soap it Up: For stubborn grime, a mixture of mild dish soap and water can be pre-applied to loosen dirt before pressure washing.
Be Sand Savvy: Pressure washing can dislodge sand from between the pavers. If this happens, polymeric sand, available at most hardware stores, can be used to refill the gaps.
Safety First: Wear eye protection and sturdy shoes when pressure washing.
